ATS systems rank resumes largely based on keyword matches between your resume and the job description. The more relevant keywords you include, the higher you score.
What Are ATS Keywords?
Keywords are the specific terms, skills, tools, certifications, and job titles that an ATS is programmed to look for. They come directly from the job posting.
How to Find the Right Keywords
Method 1: Analyze the Job Description
Read the job description three times. Underline every technical skill, tool, software, certification, and action verb. These are your primary keywords.
Method 2: Use a Word Cloud Tool
Paste the job description into a free word cloud generator. The most prominent words are likely the highest-priority keywords.
Method 3: Compare Multiple Job Postings
Search for 5–10 similar roles at different companies. List the skills and terms that appear across all of them — these are industry-standard keywords.
Where to Place Keywords in Your Resume
- Professional Summary — include 3–4 core keywords naturally in the opening paragraph
- Skills Section — list technical skills and tools as a clean, scannable list
- Work Experience — weave keywords into your bullet points as part of real achievements
- Education / Certifications — include relevant degree names and certifications verbatim
Keyword Stuffing: What to Avoid
Don't just dump keywords into your resume. Modern ATS systems and human reviewers can detect unnatural language. Each keyword should appear in a meaningful context.
Use Both Acronyms and Full Forms
Write "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)" at least once so the ATS matches both variations.
